My artwork looks to find the beauty and joy in life. I search for that sense of wonder in nature and how we must respect the balance between ourselves and the earth. Whether I am painting or sewing, the work expresses the desire that as humans we share a commonality that should unite us all, in spite of our cultural differences.
The stitched work is mixed media, combining sewing, painting and drawing. Using images as metaphors to represent the eternity of life suggests the familiar and ever present in our lives. Flowers, cups, and markings are a part of my vocabulary that reference our being part of life on earth. With collage as a basis for each artwork, I incorporate paper, fabric and maps that I have collected over the years. Because of the personal elements within the work, each piece could be interpreted autobiographically, as places that I have visited or references to home and family.
The paintings are acrylic with dried pigments, pencil and pastels on canvas. As in the stitched work, I use iconic images as references for our connections to each other. I treat each painting in an improvisatory method, allowing the images to appear on the canvas until they have spoken completely. Emphasis on place, the passing of time, and the experiences of my life all inform the work.
I am originally from Connecticut, lived in Santa Fe, NM for 22 years, and currently live in Los Angeles, CA. I have devoted my life to art and music. Whether it is the green of the east coast, the high desert of the southwest, or the Pacific Ocean, I am profoundly influenced by the natural beauty of our earth and sky, our universe.
