The Beyond LA artists have collaborated to create new artworks for an exhibit titled Above and Beyond. The art pieces are inspired by the theme of the California Brown Pelican. This species of pelican is native to Southern California, including San Pedro and primarily nests in the Channel Islands. These birds were found to be endangered in 1970 due to pesticide use. Thanks to efforts to restrict pesticides and establish protected nesting grounds, the California Brown Pelicans have thrived. In 2009 they were officially removed from the federal list of endangered species in the United States. This is a story of hope.
The artists have cut a pelican shape from plywood as a base to work from, and then individually enhanced their bird in their own interpretation. The pelicans are suspended over the garden, “flying” in a V shaped pattern.
