Interplay: Craft, Art & Design was an exhibition juried by Holly Jerger for SoLA Contemporary Gallery.  Her premise was that much that has been considered craft has now been elevated to fine art, and perhaps there should no longer be a distinction between the categories. She chose Kaman’s piece “Kyoto Blue”.  The artwork crosses the boundaries of sewing and drawing.  The base is several strips of varying blue fabrics (some hand painted by Kaman) sewn together, and the image of a bowl stitched onto them.  The bowl is done in a linear way with felt, simulating a hand drawn line, and then embellished with embroidery threads.

The tassels hanging from the edge of the bowl reminded Kaman of the doorways in Kyoto, when straw is hung from their edges, and thus the name “Kyoto Blue”.
