Kaman’s work for this exhibition plays with the idea of contrasts in life. She used the format of Alber’s “Homage to the Square” to create two spaces, one that was a rough fabric and one that used shiny, silky fabrics and threads. That format allowed for endless visual effects from the fabrics, and lets the imagination be free to suggest how opposites exist together. She looks for that place where opposites attract and depend on each other, for the balance of nature in life.
While in Okawa, there were 3 other exhibition spaces where the American artists exhibited with the Studio Nexus artists from Japan: The main venue is the Seiriki Museum of Art, and paintings and three-dimensional works will be exhibited at the former Yoshiwara family residence The Yoshihara House, The Vinegar House (Shobunsu Meiji storehouse), and The Morita lacquer shop. It was a true blending of cultures and friendship. The exhibitions included seven contemporary artists from Los Angeles, CA.
